Horse rugs come in different types. Each type has its own distinct advantages. Depending on the material from a horse rug is made of, it may also offer certain type of protection to horses.
Each type of horse rug may have different weights and characteristics. These differences allow variations for weather and climate. The different types of horse rugs and their uses are the following:
Summer sheets
These rugs are basically designed to keep horses clean, keeping dust and dirt from getting in contact with their fur. These can also be used to keep horses from getting wet although not all types may be waterproof.
Coolers
These rugs are usually used as “towels” on horses; that is, they are used to absorb moisture from the horses’ skin. Most often, these rugs are used on the horses after they have exercised. Coolers may also be used to keep horses warm during cold days. In such cases, they are usually placed under stable rugs or turnout rugs.
Stable rugs
These rugs are best for use in stabled horses. Stable rugs keep horses warmer in their stables especially during cold weather. These may be available in different weights.
Heavyweight Turnout Rugs
These are designed for use in winter. These are often used in horses that have been clipped.
Lightweight rugs
Designed for use especially during spring and autumn, some lightweight rugs may have a fleece lining to give horses extra warmth.
